CLOUD ATLAS AND THE IDEA OF CONNECTEDNESS
Cloud Atlas (2012) is one of my favourites up to date. A film that certainly requires more than one viewing to fully grasp its genius.
As an adaptation of David Mitchell’s novel, the movie could have taken a messier cinematic route, given that it follows six intertwining realities set in the fictional past, present and future. Yet it roams through all narratives with grace while skillfully punctuating the crux of its complexity; that we are all a part of a greater unity, linked together by a single cosmic chain of cause and effect. Themes exploring morals, identity and purpose are brilliantly conveyed through excellent cinematography and dialogue too.
In essence, each storyline does a fine job in communicating the main premise:
“By each crime, and every kindness, we birth our future.”
